In strengthening Occupational Safety, Health and the Environment (OSHE) at Fidelity Printers and Refiners (Pvt) Ltd (FPR), a Basic First Aid training was undertaken by the staff. The training was aimed at equipping employees with the basic knowledge and skills necessary for an individual to provide simple life support care to an ill or injured person until professional emergency response arrives. 34 employees representing all departments received the training that was carried out by the City of Harare, Fire Brigade and Ambulance Services. The training culminated in the employees receiving Basic First Aid Training and Fire Fighting Certificates after successfully passing a written and practical examination.

The course objectives included to preserve life, to prevent the illness or injury from getting worse and to promote recovery. The training buttressed the importance of a first aider’s key responsibilities which entail making the scene safe, examining the patient, managing the patient, performing Cardiac, Pulmonary, Cerebral Resuscitation (CPCR), putting the patient into a recovery position, calling for help and handing over the patient to the Ambulance crew.

The training which is critical for all employees and apply to every industry regardless of size is essential for workplace safety. It is not a matter of “if”, but “when” the situation will occur therefore, FPR has ensured that when the situation occurs, the trained staff are ready to come in and assist.
